AAR Railroad Reporting Marks A railroad reporting mark, officially known as a standard carrier alpha code SCACis a two to four letter code assigned by Railinc for-profit subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, or AAR that uniquely identifies the owner of a piece of railroad rolling stock. The mark is stenciled on the sides of equipment such as locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars.
